Priest of Sanguine, Adept Illithid Psionicist
Appearance: Concealed head to toe in his red priestly garb, Xax reveals his true nature as an illithid only when he wishes. His true appearance is monstrous and can be intimidating, with four short and two long tentacles hanging from his face and piercing red eyes.
Personality: As the spiritual and moral center of the quest and crew, Xax always has his hands full being a good example in spite of rowdy crew dealing with decisions affecting many future generations. While he keeps some secrets, Xax is always willing to extend a little trust in return for the truth, but he also has a darker streak that is constant reminder of the conquering nature he must struggle against to serve his deity.
Traits: Xax is NOT a “mind flayer.” Considering their terrestrial brethren devolved, Xax’s race can maintain themselves by leaching on the brainwaves of those traveling with them. With enough non-illithid around (four or five adventurers, for example), no one would ever know Xax’s true nature unless he chose to reveal it. He speaks psionically, however, as his race have no vocal cords; most are unaware he isn’t speaking aloud when he is masked.
Backstory: As the youngest priest of his sect, Xax was tasked with keeping the citizens of the Forlorn Valley of Kaldera in check from its true past, especially a curious dwarf named Malcolm. When Xax’s brothers revealed to him the nature of their quest to find a new world for the deity, Sanguine, and his followers, Xax stepped up but has since questioned his faith upon discovering that Sanguine may have been involved in the enslavement and torture of others long before “saving” anyone.
